Generación de Biomasa como combustible y sus ventajas

La utilización de la biomasa como energía renovable nos proporciona grandes beneficios, por ejemplo:
El uso de la energía de la biomasa tiene el potencial de reducir las emisiones de gases causantes del efecto invernadero.
La quema de biomasa libera aproximadamente la misma cantidad de dióxido de carbono que la quema de combustibles fósiles. Pero en la biomasa las emisiones de dióxido de carbono quedan en gran parte compensadas por el dióxido de carbono capturado en el crecimiento de las plantas. El balance en emisiones de CO2 es neutro.

Al explotar de forma sostenible la biomasa forestal reducimos los riesgos de incendios forestales y de las plagas de insectos. Además mejoramos social y económicamente áreas rurales deprimidas, evitando la despoblación y disminuyendo las desigualdades entre regiones.

El uso de la energía de la biomasa puede reducir la dependencia del petróleo extranjero y de esta forma no depender de países productores muy inestables.

 

MINERA TORO SpA.: EXTENSIVE USE OF BIOMASS IN THE SOUTH OF CHILE

We are located between two cities, Constitucion and Chanco in the VII Region, 360 kilometers south from Santiago, Chile.
Our main activity is sand process, especially the washing and drying siliceous sand for the glass container industry. Our facilities are in the top of technology allowing diversification of raw materials produced with a very versatile process plant.

In our plant, named La Flora, we have also two more facilities; the fabrication of pallets for domestic and abroad markets and the ceramic tiles manufacturing.  All of our sections require heat  for the processes which is supplied by the use of biomass. The main source of Biomass is coming from our own wood processing installations, especially from pine trees. The manufacturing of pallets generates wood waste “biomass” that we used directly in our combustion burners in all of our processes, taking full advantage of the material and thus seeking to contribute to a sustainability concept and the care of the environmental.

Our rotatory driers require biomass for the production of dry sand, the pallets manufacturing needs biomass for a boiler in the process of drying and heat treatment for certification and finally the production of ceramics requires biomass for its furnaces.

The use of biomass as renewable energy give us big benefits such as the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions. Biomass burning releases approximately the same amount of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels, but biomass emissions of carbon dioxide are largely offset by the carbon dioxide captured in plant growth, the result is the CO2 balance is neutral.

To sustainably exploit forest biomass reduce the risk of forest fires and insect pests, besides improving socially and economically depressed rural areas, avoiding depopulation and reducing inequalities between regions.
The use of biomass energy can reduce dependence on foreign oil and thus not dependent on highly unstable producing countries.
